SUPERMOON

Posted on: March 19, 2011

Tonight is the night you’ll want to take out that bottle of wine and do some kind of romantic gesture for your loved one while looking up to the night sky… or just take the kids outside and let them enjoy something extraordinary that hasn’t been around since 1993!

The SUPERMOON!

As the sun sets tonight, the biggest, brightest moon in about 20 years will take over the sky!  According to the NASA, the “supermoon” will be about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than normal.

Because the moon’s orbit is oval, there is a point where it is the closest to the Earth, known as its perigee. Tonight, the moon’s closest perigee of the year happens to occur within one hour of the phase of the full moon, which together will create the rarely seen increased illumination and size.

If you want to maximize your viewing experience, you should set your sights on the distant horizon with objects, like mountains or buildings, in the foreground. As the moon rises behind those objects, it creates an optical illusion that makes it appear even bigger to the naked eye!

Appreciate it tonight — it’s going to be an extraordinary thing!
